Calling in: Facilitating change by acknowledging human connection

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

—Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We are living in challenging times. Topics like systemic and structural racism, inequity, oppression, and marginalization dominate the airwaves and our brain waves. It is important that we are heard, acknowledged, and given space to bring ourselves fully into these challenging conversations. Calling out the harms against us is a critical tool for holding powerful people and institutions accountable, immediately ensuring safety, setting boundaries, and preventing further harm. However, another tool exists that can lay a firm foundation for behavioral and attitudinal change in individuals within our spheres of influence: calling in.
