Underrepresented and excluded in academic leadership

The underrepresentation of racial and ethnic groups in occupational therapy leadership has garnered increased interest in recent years. Having individuals from minoritized communities in leadership roles can help develop holistic student and faculty recruitment initiatives, ensure that holistic admissions policies are enacted with fidelity, and improve inclusive instruction. This article seeks to discuss why traditional models of leadership do not account for the factors that disproportionally impact marginalized communities’ access to leadership opportunities. This article also intends to identify the barriers that limit opportunities for marginalized groups and provide actionable steps to help combat disparities.
