OT in Higher Ed

Learner-centered teaching-Application to the OT lecture classroom

Occupational therapy educators often provide their students with traditional lecture experiences in the classroom, leaving active learning for lab courses. This does not complement contemporary evidence-based teaching practices. Rather than saving active learning for labs, occupational therapy educators can maximize learning in lectures by using learner-centered teaching practices. In their clinical roles, these educators’ client-centeredness and fidelity measures in their practice come naturally. As academicians, it is time that occupational therapy educators bring the evidence-based, learner-centered teaching approach to their lectures. This approach helps students learn and master the lecture content by collaborating and doing.
