How OT CPT codes are developed and valued
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are used to describe medical services and procedures provided by healthcare professionals such as occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs). Owned by the American Medical Association (AMA), CPT codes standardize the reporting of medical services across providers and payers. CPT codes increase uniformity in the coding language, ensuring that services are reported accurately and that everyone involved in an individual’s care understands what is being delivered. While many CPT codes used by OTPs have existed for a long time, other codes are new. Whether new or old, CPT codes undergo periodic review and valuation through a structured process led by the AMA and supported by participation from medical specialty societies such as AOTA, APTA, ASHA, and others. Understanding the CPT code development and valuation process can help the profession safeguard the visibility, integrity, and value of OT services in today’s health care environment.
