CODING AND BILLING

Cognitive intervention codes

Functional cognition is how an individual utilizes and integrates his or her thinking and processing skills to accomplish everyday activities in clinical and community living environments (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2021). Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) have a key role in assessing and treating functional cognition as part of their comprehensive plans of care (American Occupational Therapy Association, n.d.). The American Medical Association has developed several CPT® codes that OTPs can utilize where appropriate to capture cognitive assessment and intervention services.
