Frequently used CPT codes for occupational therapy
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are five-digit numeric codes used to describe medical services provided by health care providers, such as occupational therapy practitioners. CPT® codes serve as a uniform language to communicate what we do and why we do it to other providers, physicians, patients, and payers.
CPT® codes are used by virtually all payers in the health care system. Accurate coding is essential to ensure appropriate reimbursement for occupational therapy services.
Each year, AOTA compiles a list of the CPT® codes frequently used by occupational therapy practitioners to report services in various settings. AOTA members can use this list to find the most commonly used codes for evaluations, modalities, therapeutic procedures, and more.
This list is not all-inclusive, and not all codes listed are accepted by all payers, including Medicare. Use of one or more of these codes may be limited by state regulations and/or payer policies. Always review state rules and the official CPT® book, and request information from specific insurers concerning available codes, billing guidelines, and payment policy.
