Learning teeth brushing: A level 3 autism spectrum disorder preschool classroom

It started with a request from a former student’s teacher to collaborate on support strategies regarding biting and self-injurious behavior (SIB). This student was diagnosed with Level 3 autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are three tiers of ASD, with Level 1 needing support, Level 2 needing substantial support, and Level 3 needing very substantial support (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The reported SIB related to extreme sensory seeking to his head and face. This student would seek pressure to his chin, bite on items, and hit himself on the side of the head. A portion of my observation took place during the student's lunch. While he was eating, it was apparent he had significant dental needs.
