Recognizing and responding: Mental health screening in rehabilitation
Mental health conditions—particularly depression and anxiety—are among the leading causes of disability worldwide (National Alliance on Mental Illness [NAMI], 2023; World Health Organization, 2023). In the United States, more than one in five adults experience a mental illness, yet only about half receive treatment (National Institute of Mental Health, 2024). This gap in care is compounded both by limited access to mental health services and a shortage of trained providers (NAMI, 2023).
