Occupational therapy practitioners: Maintaining purpose and passion
Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) often face challenges that test their resilience—challenges ranging from mental health strain and shifting professional identity to systemic barriers that affect care. These pressures can lead to burnout or even exiting the profession. Yet within these realities lies opportunity: to reflect, realign, and rediscover purpose. Taking action to address what hinders OTPs—and leaning into what sustains us—helps preserve well-being and strengthens our ability to serve others. This begins with prioritizing ourselves, not as a luxury but as a necessity. Table 1 highlights key do’s and don’ts that can guide OTPs in maintaining purpose and passion, while navigating the complexities of modern practice.
