Perspectives That Matter in OT

Are you still listening? Burnout and the voices of underrepresented OTPs

In the book, Burnout Immunity, Kandi Wiens defined burnout as a state of exhaustion caused not only by overwork but also by the emotional toll of prolonged, unmanaged stress (Wiens, 2024). Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) in the United States are experiencing high levels of burnout due to chronic workplace stress. (Shin et al., 2022). However, health care workers from underrepresented backgrounds, including OTPs, also experience additional stressors at work that may not be acknowledged.
