Community-based occupational therapy: Student fieldwork experience in rural Ghana

Ghana has a population of approximately 30.8 million people (Ghana Statistical Service, 2021) with about 100 occupational therapists (OTs) and occupational therapy assistants (OTAs). Due to the small number of occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) in the country, the rural area of Dodowa is the first and only community occupational therapy clinic. The clinic, under the Shai-Osudoku District Health Directorate, came to life in 2018 and has been growing ever since. It serves clients across the entire lifespan and sees them in a variety of settings including schools, the occupational therapy clinic, outdoor community settings, and client homes.
