Perspectives That Matter In OT
Care for the LGBTQ+ community through an OTPF-4 lens
Despite increased societal acceptance of sexual and gender-diverse populations, some members of the LGBTQ+ community continue to experience stigma and discrimination in the spaces where they live, work, and engage in meaningful occupations. These barriers impact daily participation in ways that provide an opportunity for occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) to offer support and services. Currently, occupational therapy services are more commonly provided through intervention approaches such as restoring, maintaining, or modifying participation—particularly in areas like gender affirmation surgery support, prosthetic use, and traditional rehabilitation.
