Respite care services for the disability community
In health care, beliefs about disabilities may focus on disability as impairment, influencing decisions about interventions to eliminate said impairment rather than focusing on occupation (Gupta & Taff, 2015). Contact with persons with disabilities (PWD; e.g., social, familial) and work experience that includes interaction with PWD positively relates to occupational therapy (OT) students’ positive attitudes (Stachura & Garvan, 2007; Sullivan & Mendonca, 2017). In fact, Magsamen-Conrad and colleagues (2016) concluded that contact with PWDs has a positive impact on the attitudes of college students in general and recommended course-based interventions via service or experiential learning to facilitate these positive attitudes.
