Empowered parenting: Supporting parents with disabilities through assistive technology

Occupational therapy’s role in supporting parents with disabilities is essential and often overlooked (McGrath et al., 2025). Being a parent can be part of a person’s identity, and for individuals with disabilities, this role is not diminished—it evolves (Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, 2023). Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) are well positioned to assess and address the complex interactions between person, environment, and occupation—especially when it comes to parenting tasks.
