Mentorship treasure chest: A tool kit to support the mentee–mentor connection

Mentorship is essential in occupational therapy, guiding new graduates as they transition into professional roles. Research has highlighted mentorship as a structured, goal-oriented learning process that fosters growth, thus positively affecting mentees’ attitudes, motivation, and career outcomes (Doyle et al., 2019; Eby et al., 2013). Applying the Person–Environment–Occupation (PEO) Model (Law et al., 2019), we engaged in a project to identify key internal (e.g., communication skills) and external (e.g., program support) factors influencing effective mentorship. To address the need for structured occupational therapy mentorships, the project team developed the Mentorship Treasure Chest (MTC), an online resource website, to support the Dominican Occupational Therapy Alumni Mentoring Program (DOTAMP) at Dominican University of California. The MTC equips mentors and mentees with tools for communication, engagement, and role expectations, fostering smooth student-to-professional transitions.
