Overcoming the barriers to aquatic recreation
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at least 1 in every 4 adults in the United States lives with a disability, with 1 in 7 adults having a mobility disability (2020b). Mobility disabilities caused by neurodevelopmental conditions such as spinal cord injury (SCI), cerebral palsy, stroke, and multiple sclerosis (MS) can impact a person's ability to engage in meaningful occupations, thus leading to decreased quality of life (Labbé et al., 2019). Individuals with physical disabilities are at a greater risk of developing secondary health conditions, including depression, pain, obesity, and pressure sores as a result of limited physical activity than those without physical disabilities (CDC, 2020a).
