Occupational therapy practitioners and students: Leading replicable stroke awareness campaigns
A 20-year-old college student, home for break, is sitting at the kitchen table with her father. As they talk, she notices his speech sounds slightly slurred. When he reaches for his coffee mug, his arm does not move the way she expects. He laughs it off. She hesitates. Maybe he is just tired. Maybe it is part of getting older.
In one version of this moment, she waits. The symptoms do not resolve. By the time she and her father arrive at the hospital, hours have passed. He survives, but the stroke results in lasting impairments that affect his daily routines, communication, and independence.
