Let's Talk DEI

Embracing cultural humility

Cultural humility encompasses an ongoing process of self-reflection, self-critique, and self-awareness regarding one’s cultural biases and assumptions (Agner, 2020). Cultural humility is about understanding that one’s perspective is limited, and that true understanding and progress come from actively engaging with and learning from others. It involves a commitment to making the world more just and equitable, examining one’s actions, and collaborating with others to challenge and transform unjust behaviors and policies (Agner, 2020). In the context of LGBTQIA+ clients, cultural humility calls for sensitivity to the societal challenges they may have faced, including discrimination, stigma, and limited access to health care services.
