Dementia is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder that leads to decline of cognitive functioning beyond what is expected from normal aging (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). According to the WHO (2020), 50 million people have dementia worldwide and nearly 10 million new cases are diagnosed each year. This equates to one case being diagnosed every 3 seconds worldwide. By 2030, it is predicted that there will be 82 million people with dementia, and by 2050, there are expected to be 152 million (WHO, 2020). While consciousness is not affected for persons with dementia, functional cognition, including memory, thinking, orientation, language, judgement, and learning capacity are (WHO, 2020).
