Sensory Integration & Processing SIS

The Sensory Integration & Processing Special Interest Section (formerly Sensory Integration SIS) offers leadership, resources, and information, ensuring that AOTA members are current in the research and development of sensory integration theory, assessment, and intervention as applied in occupational therapy practice. It was one of the five original Special Interest Sections created by AOTA in 1977 (the others were Developmental Disabilities, Gerontology [now Productive Aging], Mental Health, and Physical Disabilities [now Rehabilitation & Disability]).

This widely used occupational therapy frame of reference focuses on the neurobiological, sensory, and praxis foundations of occupation and play. It is applied to enrich the lives of individuals with a variety of disabilities across the lifespan.

Members of the Sensory Integration & Processing SIS have the opportunity to share resources and evidence that guide clinical reasoning in providing a carefully selected combination of services in various settings, including the home, school, hospital, and community, as well as more traditional clinic environments.
