The Work & Industry Special Interest Section (WISIS) focuses on the unique role of occupational therapy in assisting people to engage and reengage in work across the lifespan. The section is dedicated to understanding the relationship of work to human development, motivation, and performance. The WISIS provides a forum for networking with peers and other professionals, a means to access clinical resources, and a way to share emerging service delivery systems.
The WISIS supports occupational therapy practice in a wide variety of settings, including traditional rehabilitation, occupational health, work rehabilitation (work hardening, work conditioning), ergonomics, injury prevention, wellness, mental health, gerontology, and physical or developmental disability. The WISIS encourages practitioners to address work as a meaningful occupation across all practice settings and populations.
The WISIS also provides support for members via advocacy and by providing information regarding practice, research, payment systems, recruitment and retention, regulatory standards, and legislative issues. It was created by AOTA in 1987.
