Learn about priority research areas and collaborate with other researchers interested in sharing recently completed and ongoing research, initiating research, and sharing clinical data using AOTA’s new Research Opportunities Tables. 

View and Contribute to the Research Opportunities Tables

The Research Opportunities Tables provide an overview of the current available evidence on interventions within the scope of occupational therapy practice. It can be used as a tool to guide the research community during the topic planning process. Based on systematic reviews conducted by content experts and presented in the AOTA Practice Guidelines and Special Issues of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, the tables indicate that there is sufficient evidence to support an intervention or that there is moderate, mixed, or few studies to support the intervention and therefore it is a priority research area.

Using a brief form, the tables are also an opportunity for researchers to provide information on recently completed or ongoing research, initiating research, or sharing clinical data. This information is intended to minimize duplication of research efforts, stimulate discussions among researchers with similar interests, and facilitate research networks and multi-site studies.

Directions



To choose a priority research topic:

  1. Browse the practice area tabs at the top of the page to find an area of interest.
  2. Scroll down the page to browse the different categories and interventions within the practice area.
  3. Look for the strength of evidence in the rightmost column of the page.
  4. Find out more about the research topic by exploring the resources used to create the tables.
  5. Share your research plans with AOTA through a brief survey.

To contribute to the tables:

  1. Click the practice area tab that corresponds to your research, interest, or clinical data at the top of the page.
  2. Choose the topic area that corresponds with your research area.
  3. "Click to add your research information to the table" on the yellow tab at the bottom of the table and a form will open.
  4. Complete the form to the best of your ability.
  5. Once the form is completed, the table will be updated with your last name and the place where your research is conducted. Please be aware that it may take a couple days to update the tables with your information.

Q: I am not a researcher but am interested in getting involved in research. How can I use the tables and if so how?
A: There are a couple of ways to get involved using the tables if you are not a researcher. If your practice setting addresses areas listed in the tables and you are interested in sharing clinical data with researchers, you can add your information to the table. If you are new to research and are interested in starting a research project, browse the tables to look for a topic of interest that is listed as a priority research area. If you are interested in collaborating or learning more about the topic, look for contact information at the bottom of the table for people interested in initiating research, sharing ongoing or recently completed research, or sharing clinical data.

Q: Is there a search function for the tables?
A: The tables are not intended to be a database and therefore do not have a formal search function. However, once you choose a practice area of interest from the top tables on the tables, click Ctrl + F to search for key words on the page.

Q: After using the tables to choose a research topic, where can I find more information on the evidence for the intervention?
A: The tables are based on systematic reviews featured in the Practice Guidelines series and Special Issues of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. Among other relevant content, these resources include Evidence Tables that list summaries, results, limitations, and implications of all studies included in the review. This information provided in these resources can be helpful for developing a literature review as well as planning and implementing your research project.
