The American Occupational Therapy Association Grows to 50,000 Members

BETHESDA, MD—The American Occupational Therapy Association is pleased to announce that it has reached a milestone in membership: 50,000 members.

“This accomplishment is testimony to the collective commitment on the part of the organization’s volunteer leadership and staff to the spirit of AOTA’s Centennial Vision and the creation of an inclusive community of members that spans diverse professional roles in practice, education, and research,” says Frederick P. Somers, Executive Director of AOTA. “Maintaining a robust membership allows the association to work to ensure that consumers receive the occupational therapy services they need, practitioners are appropriately reimbursed for their services, and the scope of occupational therapy is protected. It also enables us to provide the resources to support our members’ practice and to build a strong community of occupational therapy practitioners.”

AOTA represents the professional interests and concerns of more than 140,000 occupational therapists, assistants, and students across the United States. The association educates the public and advances the profession of occupational therapy by providing resources, setting standards including accreditations, and serving as an advocate to improve health care. AOTA’s major programs and activities are directed toward promoting the professional development of its members and assuring consumer access to quality services so patients can maximize their individual potential. In accordance with this mission, special emphasis is placed on cultivating membership as part of AOTA’s Centennial Vision—a road map for the future of the profession to commemorate the Association’s 100th anniversary in 2017.
