Janelle Sullivan learned a lot from her mentor, Mary Evert, MBA, OTR/L, FAOTA, ScD(Hon.). Her projects included traveling to Haiti, working with asylum seekers and refugees, leading groups and creating individual treatment plans, educating others and advocating for the profession, and working with an occupational therapist who travels to the developing world and does work with various nonprofit organizations. Her mentor advised Janelle on how to approach a career in international work.
“I contemplated what drives me to want to be an occupational therapist, and I feel like I have found not only a career but a vocation,” says Janelle. She feels that her moral professional obligation is to be a voice for the voiceless, and she decided to devote her career to working toward occupational justice for all.
How did Emerging Leaders help you to live life to its fullest?
“I feel that the opportunity to participate in this program was second to none. I will be forever grateful to AOTA and this program for giving me confidence and competence in my abilities as a leader. I have been taught by my mentor to thoroughly think about life and what I want out of it, and then act in the capacity to achieve what is important to me,” says Janelle.
