In November of 2011, my doctor increased my blood pressure medication; she actually doubled it. I knew at that point the medication wasn't going to work no matter how much I took. I needed to lose weight. I had tried many different diets over the years, and the results were always the same. I would lose 10 to 20 pounds, become discouraged, then, in a short period of time, gain it back plus extra pounds. I was 58 years old and needed to lose about 80 pounds with no idea how to do it.
After hearing a friend discussing Healthē Habits for Living, I looked into their clinics and spoke with my doctor about starting their comprehensive weight loss program that was based around occupational therapy. I knew I couldn't do it on my own; there is so much information out there that I did not know where to start.
I was already playing tennis doubles and walking on my treadmill when I came to Healthē Habits. However, when I played tennis it was a challenge for me to play a whole match without getting tired and fatigued. My biggest limitation was pain and swelling in my feet and ankles. This was not only painful, but discouraging to my spirit. I needed help learning how to exercise more effectively and most of all; I needed nutritional counseling so I could plan my own meals. Simply put, I needed Healthē Habits.
Jill (an occupational therapist and the owner of HHL) instilled confidence in me that I didn’t know I could have; my confidence was built by increasing my knowledge. Their program taught me what I needed to function well. The therapy program makes people believe and understand things, so that the impossible is very possible. I came in thinking I couldn’t do this, but Healthē Habits gave me the confidence that I could do this. It was not just “do this” because it will work, but their program taught me why things worked and how to make changes to my plan while staying focused on my goals. The support and encouragement that I could do this helped me modify my thinking and habits. I could do it...I have done it! I have learned the tools that I will take with me for life; basic tools that I can use at any point in my life.
Here I am 6 months later; my pain and swelling have completely vanished. I can now play multiple tennis matches and keep up my energy levels. I have lost 50 pounds and I am even able to run—on my absolute best days up to 5 miles. But the best news is that, after 8 years, I am completely off of high blood pressure medication.
Healthē Habits for Living has changed my life for the better.
