Trauma Hospital - OT Student

Carlatta Roache - Occupational Therapy Student
Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, New York

(9/23/05) I did my Level II fieldwork at a trauma hospital in an inpatient rehabilitation unit. I treated adults with a variety of diagnoses, including fractures due to car accidents, gunshot wounds, knee replacement, strokes, and more. This facility allowed students to visit other units employed by occupational therapists, such as the traumatic brain injury unit, outpatient, and sub-acute units.

My experience at this facility was great. I learned from the occupational therapist as well as the physical therapist, speech-language pathologist, nursing staff, and medical doctors. The entire staff was friendly and always willing to answer questions. I also made friends with other occupational therapy students and we often discussed treatment ideas.

Three major things that I learned from this facility are how to think on my feet, how to treat clients with very little equipment, and how to manage my time.
