Pediatric Clinic - OT Student

Chrisha McGann - Occupational Therapy Student
University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

(9/23/05) At my school, we have three 8-week rotations. My first 8-week rotation was at a pediatric outpatient rehabilitation clinic affiliated with a major hospital in Oklahoma. I worked with one occupational therapist, two physical therapists, and two speech-language pathologists in the pediatric department.

It was so nice to work in a collaborative environment where therapists shared ideas and enthusiasm for the children they served. I had the opportunity to take away a real sense of what parents deal with on a daily basis when they have a child with a medical issue or physical disability. I experienced the impact on the entire family, including siblings.

I learned all the things that can't be taught in school: the compassion, frustration, enthusiasm, and pure joy to watch a child participate with their family and in life.
