Frequently Asked Questions About WFOT

What is WFOT and how do I contact the organization?

The World Federation of Occupational Therapists is the official international organization that supports and promotes occupational therapy around the world. Currently there are 57 member countries, including the United States, one of the founding countries. You can contribute to the global development and growth of the profession by joining as an individual member of WFOT. You will receive the WFOT professional journal (The Bulletin) twice a year and have an opportunity to engage in international projects. Additional dues are required with your AOTA membership. Visit the WFOT Web site at www.wfot.org.au.

I am certified to practice occupational therapy in the United States and am interested in working in another country. How can I get more information?

The most accurate contact information can be obtained from an occupational therapy association located in the country in which you wish to work. The association's address and other information about each member country is available on WFOT’s Web site at www.wfot.org.au.

Remember, not all countries have an organized occupational therapy association. Therefore, occasionally you must seek other sources of information. Often, the most knowledgeable sources are therapists who have worked as volunteers in a country, in the ministry of health for the country, or in the health affairs office at the country’s embassy or consulate. Therapists are expected to have 1 year or more of clinical practice experience before working abroad.
