DMEPOS Suppliers Not Seeking Accreditation Must Terminate Their NSC Number; OTs in Private Practice Exempt
During the May 28th Skilled Nursing Facility/Long Term Care Open Door Forum, Sandra Bastinelli of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that any durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) supplier that has decided not to get accredited should submit a voluntary termination to the National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC). These DMEPOS suppliers should deactivate their NSC number by September 30, 2009 so that the NSC does not revoke the number and to ensure that they may retain Medicare Part B billing privileges. Suppliers can make changes online using the CMS 855S form.
CMS issued an MLN Matters article to provide further information and instructions.
DMEPOS suppliers enrolled with the NSC are required to obtain accreditation by September 30, 2009. After advocacy efforts by AOTA and other provider organizations, CMS announced in September 2008 that occupational therapists in private practice are exempt from accreditation requirements.
