Course Description
Occupational therapy programs have an opportunity to play a proactive role in the development of services that better meet community mobility needs for their clients. Lack of services and the risk of leaving non–drivers stranded have been identified as barriers to addressing driving competence and the consequences of driving cessation for medically at-risk drivers. The challenges facing seniors with dementias cannot be addressed by typical public transportation alone. Senior advocates have identified barriers and have responded by developing a growing body of professional supports and resources.

The Senior Mobility Choices Webcast will enable learners to identify options that can be accessed in their communities. National speakers from the National Center for Senior Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the University of Massachusetts (Boston) Gerontology Department, and the Beverly Foundation will explore opportunities for advocacy, funding, and enhanced mobility service networks for well, elderly seniors that are aging with medical conditions, and seniors aging with dementia. Occupational therapy has an opportunity to become a leader in advocating for safe mobility options.
