Course Description
A common sequela of acquired brain injury is visual impairment, which is estimated to occur in approximately 30% of stroke patients and up to 50% of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Homonymous hemianopsia is the most common visual impairment resulting from stroke or TBI. Many textbooks for occupational therapy students cover the pathology of vision loss and give general suggestions for intervention, but they lack information on systematic approaches and the effectiveness of rehabilitation techniques for visual field loss.

This short course will provide an update on what appear to be the most effective interventions for occupational performance for people with visual field loss. It will cover intervention techniques as well as research on and clinical experience with the following interventions:

  • Scanning techniques
  • Vision restoration therapy, a computer-based program using light stimulation at the “border zone” of residual vision
  • Optokinetic therapy, a computer-based program designed for people with right hemianopsia that involves the use of continuous moving text to induce forced right saccadic movement of the eyes.

Learning Objectives
After completing this session, you will be able to—

  • Identify patterns of impairment related to homonymous hemianopsia.
  • Identify compensatory intervention strategies related to homonymous hemianopsia.
  • Recognize the neuroplasticity concepts regarding improvement of visual field resolution.
  • Identify documentation methods for outcomes in occupational performance in clients with hemianopsia.
