COURSE DESCRIPTION
Technology provides school-based occupational therapy practitioners with expanded options for helping students with disabilities meet their unique learning needs and participate in the school environment. As you participate in this new online course from AOTA, you will learn about assistive technology (AT), focusing specifically on the AT service delivery process, the role of occupational therapy in that process, and the availability and implementation of AT devices.
When properly executed, the AT service delivery process matches a student to the best device to support participation in school-based occupations. Occupational therapy practitioners are valuable contributors to the team process of providing AT devices and services for students. They have a distinct understanding of the impact of disability on desired occupation-based outcomes, the activity demands of a given occupation, and the process of providing occupational modifications and accommodations for people with disabilities.
The purpose of this course is to provide occupational therapy practitioners with knowledge of the AT process as it is delivered in schools, and how it can assist practitioners in considering the use of technology to increase student participation in meaningful school-based occupations. A wide range of tools may be defined as AT devices, but understanding the process the occupational therapy practitioner uses to incorporate those tools in providing modifications and accommodations for students is a foundational skill.
The Understanding the Assistive Technology Process to Promote School-Based Occupation Outcomes online course may be a springboard for participants to pursue more specialized training in the area of AT services and devices, or simply increase their familiarity with AT services and device features and provide resources for more specialized supports. The course assumes that participants are familiar with the basic processes for providing educational supports for students with disabilities, as outlined in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004; P.L. 108–446) and related legislation.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify key components of the definition of AT
- Identify the requirements schools receiving federal funding have under the law for providing AT devices and services for students with disabilities
- Differentiate the four phases of the AT service delivery process in schools
- Identify the critical steps occupational therapy practitioners should take according to their role in each of the four phases the AT service delivery process in schools
- Identify commonly available AT resources used by school-based occupational therapisty practitioners to improve students’ school-based occupation outcomes.
Course Format
This course comprises six lessons and a summary. In each lesson, participants may find some or all of the following:
- Learning objectives that outline expected learning outcomes for each lesson
- Experiential learning activities (required) that provide a way to further explore the content of the lessons and take the form of case examples, “Web Quests,” and worksheets. Participants must complete each activity to successfully complete the course.
- Extended learning opportunities (optional) developed to provide resources to extend their learning in a content area beyond the scope of this course. They generally take the form of Web Quests and will not affect the ability to respond appropriately to the course final exam.
- Technology skill sheets that provide opportunities to learn specific and helpful technology skills or review reference material. Developing a basic level of knowledge and skills to support the use of commonly available AT by students with disabilities is an integrated component of this course. The technology skill sheets are integrated with case examples provided in each lesson. Participants will also find links to online resources to further develop their skills beyond those provided in the course
