Course Description

The incidence of shoulder pain in patients who have had a stroke is estimated to be as high as 72%—a significant percentage, as hemiplegic shoulder pain can severely limit patients’ independence in life tasks. The differential diagnosis of this problem is difficult, as the various etiologies are often intertwined. This interactive course is for intermediate–level occupational therapy practitioners and presents a variety of methods to assess, prevent, and manage shoulder pain in patients with hemiplegia. Topics include

  • Anatomy and kinesiology of the shoulder complex
  • Etiologies of shoulder pain and how to manage and treat it
  • Proper and improper techniques in ROM, positioning, and handling in order to prevent trauma to joint structures
  • Preventing immobilization and RSD
  • Treatment of subluxations and brachial plexus injuries.

Teaching Methods

Course content is delivered in text format, animation, graphics, live Web links, activities, discussion board, and email with instructor, as well as summaries and helpful review questions after each lesson. Case studies are presented at the end of the course dealing with assessment and treatment of shoulder pain, including thought-provoking questions and discussion board interaction with fellow practitioners.

Final Grade

The final grade is based on a multiple-choice midterm and final exam. Each exam is of equal weight, and there is a required passing score of 80% for each exam.
