Course Description
An intermediate–level course designed for practitioners who want to become more knowledgeable about hand development and dysfunction in children with multiple and developmental disabilities. It is taught by instructor Rhoda P. Erhardt, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, a well-known pioneer for her work in hand development. Her first book, Developmental Hand Dysfunction, introduced the Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment. In print for more than 25 years, this ground-breaking book is used in university occupational therapy programs and by clinicians throughout the world.
Teaching Methods
The course is highly interactive with content delivered in text format, graphics, downloadable/printable handouts, live Web links, case studies, assignments, experiential labs (quick, simple activities to try on your own to experience hand-related concepts and challenges firsthand), clinical observations, and access to the discussion board. An accompanying CD-Rom provides video observation clips that demonstrate developmental stages and will be shipped directly from Dynamic Learning upon course registration.
| Required Reading (to be purchased separately): Participants are required to read the Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment (EDPA) that is necessary for complete understanding and participation throughout the course. The EDPA can be ordered directly from Erhardt Developmental Products® at a cost of $10 for a package of 5. Links to order the required reading are located within the course as well as other recommended and optional readings. |
Final Grade
The final grade is based on a minimum cumulative score of 80%. The components that make up the final grade are:
- Participation (at least 10 posts on the discussion board, including 5 required activities of observations and labs) 25%
- Assignment (1 case report) 25%
- Multiple choice midterm and final exam 50%. (Each exam is of equal weight, and there is a required passing score of 80% for each exam.)

- Distinguish the contribution of historical and contemporary research in the fields of different disciplines to the study of hand development
- Recognize the value of a broad base of theoretical frames of reference relating to hand function in the problem-solving process during assessment and treatment planning
- Experience the foundational components of arm and hand development
- Identify interruptions of normal arm and hand development that result in compensatory postures and movements
- Differentiate effective assessment procedures for children with hand problems related to their developmental or multiple disabilities
- Apply assessment data related to hand problems to intervention programs in home, school, or community environments
- Identify functional implications and intervention strategies related to disorders of eye–hand coordination
- Identify the genetic, developmental, and environmental factors relating to handedness in non-disabled and disabled individuals and criteria for intervention
- Identify the theoretical foundations for visual–perceptual–motor problems affecting handwriting and a performance-based assessment/intervention/maintenance model.
