Course Description
Teachers, families, and health professionals are increasingly seeking occupational therapists to address children’s medical and behavioral feeding disorders. This intermediate-level course is for pediatric therapists interested in building the foundational skills to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment within an interdisciplinary setting. Topics include the international classification of functioning and disability, normal eating and feeding skills, aspects of eating and feeding, common feeding disorders, management of feeding disorders, therapeutic assessment, promoting full participation in mealtime environments, therapeutic treatment of body level feeding/eating impairments, and special populations and case studies.
Teaching Methods
Teaching methods are focused on promoting an interactive, lively learning experience with practical suggestions to enhance clinical problem solving. This is achieved through the use of graphics, pictures, videos, live Web links, experiential activities, use of the discussion board, e-mail with instructor, and case studies.
Final Grade
The final grade is determined by one final exam with a minimum passing score of 80%.

Learning Objectives
As a result of the successful completion of this course, you will be able to
- Identify medical factors that contribute to pediatric feeding disorders
- Distinguish between normal, delayed, and abnormal oral–motor skills
- Identify components of an aspiration screening during a clinical feeding assessment
- Recognize pediatric clinical and instrumental swallowing evaluations
- Differentiate the members of the interdisciplinary medical team involved in the diagnosis and treatment of feeding disorders and their roles
- Identify clinical evaluation strategies to assess oral–motor skills, screen for swallowing problems, and identify common behavioral problems related to pediatric eating and feeding
- Select appropriate family centered, culturally sensitive intervention strategies for children with motor and behavioral feeding disorders.

Faculty Bio
Donna Reigstad, MS, OTR received her advanced master's degree in occupational therapy, with a specialization in early intervention and school-based practice from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is the lead occupational therapist at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. During her tenure at the hospital, she has worked in the Feeding Clinic for 15 years, both as a member of the interdisciplinary team and as the clinic coordinator. She was an assistant clinical professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo Department of Occupational Therapy, and at D’Youville College, where she taught pediatric and theory courses.
Ms. Reigstad has co-authored book chapters on feeding assessment and management. She has presented on feeding topics at the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, at the American Occupational Therapy Association annual conferences, and at numerous programs in New York and Pennsylvania.
