Course Description
This DVD-formatted instructional course helps occupational therapists integrate electrical agent modalities as a preparatory intervention in practice to improve client-centered and occupation-based outcomes. Evidence that identifies the effectiveness of each electrical modality intervention is presented as well as the step-by-step practical application of each device.

Course content provides the theoretical and biological concepts of each electrical modality in a format that includes lecture, demonstration, PowerPoint™, online discussion board, and case studies, with an emphasis on treatment planning and assessing outcomes. It is designed to assist learners in obtaining the training and continuing education they may need to comply with state certification requirements related to the use of physical agent modalities by occupational therapists. Check with your state licensing or regulatory board to determine if there are such specific requirements in your state.

Course Manual as Required Reading: Accompanying the course is a detailed 200-page manual that will help solidify your understanding of the material presented. In addition, it includes “talking points” and FAQs, as well as copies of the PowerPoint slides shown on the DVD. The manual is available online at no additional cost. You may also select it in CD or print format, both of which are available directly from Treatment2Go at an additional fee once you have registered.

A post-test format is employed to demonstrate mastery of the material presented and is available online from Treatment2Go once you have registered.

Course content includes the demonstration of the following

  • Integration of occupation and physical agent modalities.
  • Biological principles of wound healing.
  • Underlying biological and physiological principle of electrical modalities.
  • Pain propagation, perception, and management.
  • Principles and foundations of electrophysiology.
  • Principles of hydrotherapy.
  • Clinical decision making and application of thermal agents.
  • Clinical application of ultrasound.
  • Physical principles of light.
  • Therapeutic use of electrical agents including IFC, pre-modulation stimulation, high voltage stimulation, TENS, and Russian stimulation in rehabilitation.
  • Low level laser therapy demonstrations and online viewing lab time.
  • Transdermal drug delivery through iontophoresis.
  • Case studies in neurological rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, and industrial rehabilitation.
  • Indications, contraindications, and safety awareness for use of thermal agents.

Important Note:  This course provides conceptual preparation for seeking additional training. It does not provide a mentored hands-on skills session.  Additional experience with a mentor while performing hands-on use of electrical agent modalities is strongly recommended.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this DVD, the learner will be able to

  1. Recognize how the use of physical agent modalities as a preparatory intervention can support occupation-based outcomes to support participation.
  2. Identify the phases of wound healing and the cellular events unique to each phase.
  3. Recognize the use of electrical agent modalities related to wound healing.
  4. Delineate the principles of electrical current.
  5. Identify common therapeutic waveforms including ascribed effects and contraindications.
  6. Delineate current concepts of pain propagation and potential for alteration of pain perception using electrical modalities.
  7. Recognize the physical principles of light and their potential for remediation of pain.
  8. Determine appropriate interventions with electrical modalities in a variety of practice settings.
  9. Identify how physical agents can be employed in the context of the client’s own unique experience.
  10. Differentiate environmental, temporal and cultural considerations for the use of physical agents.
  11. Delineate the processes of pharmacokinetics.

Access to Online Manual, Discussion Board, and Electronic Exam
