AOTA Presents at National Conference of Community Mental Health Center Leaders

On May 2, 2008 AOTA member Katherine Burson and AOTA Legislative Representative Tim Nanof presented before the National Council for Community Behavioral Health Care (NCCBHC) at their annual conference in Boston, MA.

The presentation was part of AOTA's long range planning and activities to expand the role of occupational therapy in community mental health.

Community mental health centers are federally established and provide a substantial portion (about 75%) of the public mental health services funded by states, federal programs, and Medicaid.

AOTA has been working closely with the NCCBH to educate their leadership about occupational therapy and has developed working relationships with them. AOTA and the NCCBH have also worked together to oppose Medicaid regulations that would negatively affect community mental health and have been proactively promoting mental health parity legislation.
