Transitions or movements occur throughout an individual’s life. Each person navigates through different life stages, settings, and situations. Occupational therapy practitioners can make significant contributions by preparing an individual to face an expected transition like entering college or the workforce. OTs can also support an individual facing an unexpected transition as a result of an injury or disability. OTs can help by adapting environments and activities to make a transition smoother and to support meaningful participation. Since OTs are activity experts, they can help increase independence in daily life activities necessary for community integration . Two formal transitions occur for students with disabilities as they move through their educational pathway from cradle to college and career. The first formal time, written under IDEA, is early childhood. This is a significant times of change for students with disabilities as they prepare to enter preschool or kindergarten. The second formal transition time, no later than age 16, is when students with disabilities prepare to leave high school.
