Los Angeles Resident Elected to National Leadership Post

Shawn Phipps to serve as Director to the Board of Directors for the American Occupational Therapy Association

BETHESDA, MD — The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) announces that Shawn Phipps, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, has been elected by a vote of its membership as a director to the Board of Directors for the national professional organization.

Dr. Phipps is the chief strategic development officer at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. He is President of the Occupational Therapy Association of California and serves on the Board of Councilors in the Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California.

“I am honored and humbled to be elected to serve on AOTA’s Board of Directors,” said Phipps. “I vow to provide the bold leadership required to build on the foundations of our past, and position occupational therapy as the most valued profession to address occupation, health, participation, and wellness in all traditional and emerging practice areas.”

An AOTA member since 1996, Phipps earned a PhD in Healthcare Administration from Touro University in 2011, an MS in Occupational Therapy from San Jose University in 2002, and a BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern California in 1997.

As one of 6 directors to the Board of Directors, Phipps will collaborate with the 14-member board to maintain the strategic direction for the organization, act as a spokesperson, and provide a clear and consistent direction for the executive director. He will officially take office on July 1 and serve through 2015.
