Power Mobility Prior Authorization Demonstration – CMS Special ODF Scheduled for October 24, 2012
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has published plans via a Federal Register Notice to begin a Power Mobility Devices (PMD) demonstration pilot on September 1, 2012. The demonstration involves a Prior Authorization process for scooters and power wheelchairs for people with Fee-For-Service Medicare who reside in seven states: CA, IL, MI, NY, NC, FL and TX. The demonstration is designed to reduce improper payments for power mobility devices, to develop and improve methods for the investigation and prosecution of health care fraud, and to help ensure that a beneficiary's medical condition warrants their medical equipment under existing coverage guidelines. Additional information is available on the CMS web page (Prior Authorization of Power Mobility Devices Demonstration), as well as the AOTA page.
CMS will hold a special open door forum on October 24, 2012 from 2-3pm ET. If you wish to participate, dial: 1-800-837-1935; Conference ID: 51158968. AOTA staff will be on the call.
