AOTA Joins R-Word Coalition

AOTA and more than 200 organizations have signed a Coalition of Statement and Support for a Special Olympics campaign that focuses on eliminating the use of the “R-word” for people with intellectual disabilities.

The campaign’s Web site points out that using the word “retard” to describe an individual with intellectual disabilities is hurtful and disrespectful:

“Our choice of language frames how we think about others. It’s time to respect and value people with intellectual disabilities. It is time to accept and welcome us as your friends and neighbors.”
