Aging in Place: Consumers and Builders Listening

AOTA staff and volunteers educated building professionals and consumers about occupational therapy’s role in helping people age in place at the AARP 50+ National Event in Washington, D.C., and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelers’ Show in Baltimore, in September 2008. AOTA exhibited and presented at both conferences.

At the AARP event, AOTA and AARP staff jointly presented Home Fit: Assessing Your Home for Livability.

Similarly, representatives from AOTA, NAHB, and AARP copresented Building Cross-Market Relationships in Aging-In-Place Remodeling at the Remodelers' Show. The presentation and exhibit were well received. Home builders increasingly recognize the benefit of collaboration with occupational therapy practitioners and are seeking ways to connect with them.

AOTA is establishing a list of occupational therapy practitioners with expertise in home modifications and interest in collaborating with building professionals who contact AOTA. If you would like to be listed, send an e-mail to ksmith@aota.org with your name, credentials, address, phone number, e-mail, and a brief description of your experience or interest in home modifications.
